Who Buys Businesses in Houston?

Smaller businesses here are valued on a multiple of Seller's Discretionary Earnings, typically 2x to 4x. Once a business is generating meaningful EBITDA — call it $2 million and up — the valuation method changes to an EBITDA multiple and the multiples themselves go up, because a different class of buyer is competing for it.

That transition point is where Houston sellers most often leave money behind. A business valued the Main Street way, sold to a single individual buyer, can be worth substantially less than the same business taken to three private equity groups and a strategic acquirer at once. Knowing which side of that line you're on is most of the valuation work.

Houston Business Brokers for Owner-Operated Companies

Graymarc represents owners across Houston, Harris County, and the surrounding metro who are ready to sell. Houston has something most Texas markets don't: a genuinely deep pool of buyers with capital. Private equity firms, search funds, and strategic acquirers all shop here actively.

Selling a Business in Houston: What the Market Looks Like

Houston's economy runs on scale. Energy and energy transition, the Ship Channel and the petrochemical corridor, the Texas Medical Center, aerospace around Johnson Space Center, advanced manufacturing, and one of the busiest ports in the country.

Every one of those industries is served by hundreds of privately held companies: the industrial service contractors, the specialty fabricators, the logistics operators, the environmental and safety firms, the staffing and equipment businesses. Those companies are the ones that sell, and many are owned by people who built them over thirty years and are now deciding what happens next.

Houston is also where the top of our range lives. We work with businesses up to $30 million in enterprise value, and Houston produces more of them than anywhere else in Texas.

What Is My Houston Business Worth?

The Businesses That Change Hands in Houston

Private equity and portfolio add-ons. Houston has real PE attention, particularly in industrial services, where firms are actively rolling up regional contractors. If your business is a plausible add-on to something they already own, that's usually the highest bid on the table.

Strategic acquirers. Competitors and adjacent companies buying for your crews, your contracts, or your geographic coverage. They can pay above the financial value because the business is worth more inside theirs — but they're also the buyer you most need protected from until an NDA is signed.

Search funds and independent sponsors. Well-capitalised individuals backed by investors, hunting one business to acquire and run. Houston sees a lot of them. They move quickly and diligence hard.

Individual buyers using SBA financing. Real buyers for businesses at the smaller end, provided the cash flow comfortably covers the debt service on the loan.

Industrial and energy services transact constantly — mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, coatings, environmental, and maintenance contractors. So do logistics and transportation businesses, specialty manufacturing and fabrication, healthcare support companies around the medical industry, and professional and technical services firms.

This isn't a list of what we'll take on. We work with privately held, owner-operated businesses across a wide range of industries, generally between $200,000 and $6,000,000 in annual profit, with enterprise values from $500,000 to $30,000,000.

Our focus is on doing right by the owner — whether that means working together or helping point you in the right direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Houston-based business broker?

Not at all! What matters is the buyer pool, not the office. Houston buyers are national and institutional — a PE firm evaluating your business doesn't care where your advisor's desk is. What matters is whether your broker can run a competitive process.

Is my business big enough for private equity to care?

Usually the threshold is around $1.5 to $2 million of EBITDA for a standalone platform, but add-on acquisitions can be considerably smaller if you fit something a firm already owns. We'll tell you upfront whether that pool is realistically in play, because it changes the entire strategy.
